Consulting Engineering and Supervision for the Port of Hainaıs Breakwaters Reconstruction

Consultoría, Ingeniería y Diseños, S.A., COINDISA, served as Technical Consultants and Construction Supervisor for the Rehabilitation of the Port of Hainaıs Breakwaters. This is the main port in the Dominican Republic, and is located in the south coast, 15 km from Santo Domingo.

In 1996, this port moved 67% of the countryıs cargo and gorged 57% of the ships that visited the Dominican Republic. The breakwaters were originally built in 1951, and had been modified, repaired and reinforced several times, especially the eastern breakwater, which due to its position, is severely exposed to the waves. The passage of several hurricanes and storms had been weakening the existent structures, but were the hurricane "David" and the storm "Frederic", in 1979, which practically destroyed them. In 1986, the Dominican Republicıs Ministry of Public Works signed loan no.172/IC-DR, with the Inter American Development Bank (I.D.B.), for the reconstruction of the breakwaters, which started in August 1993 and was officially put into service by the Dominican President in February of 1997.

COINDISA checked and made sure that the alignments, elevations and transversal sections of the construction adjusted to the approved design, and that the specifications as for thickness, distribution and quality of the several layers of materials were appropriate and in agreement with the plans. The total cost of the construction work was approximately US$33 millions.
